Optical mouse, DFMA redesign
A product teardown and Boothroyd–Dewhurst redesign that took an optical mouse from 18 parts to 7 and from 287 to 29 seconds to assemble.
We disassembled a Lenovo optical mouse, separated essential from non-essential components and modelled the parts in SolidWorks to set a manufacturing baseline.
Boothroyd–Dewhurst analysis across manual and semi-automated assembly scenarios then drove the redesign.
What I did
- Teardown, component analysis and SolidWorks modelling of the original product.
- Assembly time and cost analysis for manual and semi-automated scenarios.
